Secret Sports Power Rankings Formula Rates Teams, Makes Predictions
Sports Power Rankings are a way of measuring the relative, real-time strength of all of the teams in a given league, conference, or division – all of the teams that play an interlocking schedule within a sport.
- Sports Power Rankings (SPRs) are used to start or
settle arguments among sports fans about which team is “better”
- SPRs are used by sports handicappers to forecast which team is more likely to win an upcoming game
- SPRs are used to identify the best players on the best teams for selection in fantasy football, fantasy basketball, and fantasy baseball leagues
I started trying to predict the outcomes of upcoming games when I was about 12 years old, in the early 1980s, using the “PF” and “PA” totals from the NFL standings on the agate page of my local sports section. My formula, tweaked with some input from my father (who was a professional statistician), enabled me to win the football pool run by my buddies four straight years in high school.
One day a few years later, I had a sudden intuitive leap of understanding about how best to objectively rank all of the teams within a given league or sport (read the whole story, coming soon with a link here). After some trial and error and a little math, I perfected a “Formula” for objectively determining sports power rankings that can be applied to baseball, basketball, football, soccer, hockey, footy – really, to any league or sport.
This site, Sports-Power-Rankings.com, attempts to do three things:
- Share the SPRs that our SPR “Formula” develops for teams in various sports leagues, conferences, and divisions in sports around the world.
- Compile "consensus” SPRs from among the most popular articles on the web, so that sports fans and handicappers can benefit from the “wisdom of the crowd”.
- Distribute information about how to use SPRs to:
- Handicap, predict, and pick upcoming games
- Maximize the performance of your fantasy football or fantasy baseball team.
